Here’s a photo of Steve Jobs in his spartan apartment, likely taken around 1982, surrounded by a superb Hi-Fi system, a few vinyl records on the floor, and an enormous Tiffany style lamp. His Hi-Fi system included a pair of Acoustat Monitor 3 speakers, Threshold FET-One preamplifier, Threshold STASIS-1 power amplifiers, Denon TU-750 digital tuner, and a Michell Engineering GyroDec Mark I turntable.
Steve Jobs’s System
Acoustat Monitor 3 speakers are electrostatic loudspeakers renowned for their exceptional clarity and transparency. Their unique design, featuring a thin, transparent diaphragm, allows for a more natural and uncolored sound. Known for their wide soundstage and excellent imaging, Monitor 3s are often praised by audiophiles for their ability to deliver a truly immersive listening experience.
The Threshold FET-One Preamplifier is a high quality component renowned for its exceptional sonic performance. It’s Field Effect Transistor (FET) based design delivers transparency, clarity, and dynamic range.
The Threshold STASIS-1 was a powerhouse, single channel power amplifier that could easily power those Acoustat speakers.
The Denon TU-750 tuner was a bit of an outlier in such a high end system, it is an inexpensive but excellent digital AM/FM tuner.
Michell Engineering’s GyroDec Mark I turntable is a high performance, belt drive turntable with a really unique aesthetic. It uses some rather exotic materials for a turntable, and this combination of beauty and technology likely really appealed to Steve Jobs.
