John Lennon
John Lennon was an English singer, songwriter, musician, and peace activist best known as a founding member of the Beatles, one of the most influential bands in music history. Born in Liverpool, Lennon’s songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney produced numerous hits that defined the 1960s.
Lennon’s music often carried messages of peace and love, with songs like “Imagine” and “Give Peace a Chance” becoming anthems for anti-war movements. Beyond music, he was also an artist and author, collaborating with his second wife, Yoko Ono, on various projects.
After the Beatles disbanded, Lennon continued his musical career, releasing the album “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band” and singles such as “Instant Karma!” and “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”. His life was tragically cut short in 1980 when he was murdered in New York. Despite his death, Lennon’s legacy endures through his timeless music and enduring message of peace.
John Lennon’s Hi-Fi Systems
We have four old photos of John Lennon to share with you.
In the first photo, likely taken in 1980, we see John relaxing on a bed with a guitar, next to a system that includes a Sansui AU 9900 amplifier, Sony STR-6120 receiver, and a Diatone LT-3 (also known as the Mitsubishi LT-3) turntable. In the bottom of the cabinet are a pair of Yamaha YH-1 headphones.
The Sony STR-6120 is a vintage stereo FM receiver that was produced by Sony in the 1960s and 1970s. The Sansui AU-9900 is a vintage stereo amplifier from the same era. The Diatone LT-3 is a direct drive turntable with a linear tracking tonearm. The Yamaha YH-1 “orthodynamic” headphones were designed by Italian designer Mario Bellini.
In the second and third photos, you can see John and his wife Yoko on a bed in a different apartment. On the top shelf, you can see the same Sony STR-6120 receiver next to a Thorens TD-125 turntable, and on the headboard, a pair of Koss Pro4/aa headphones. This photo was likely taken in the 1970s.
The Thorens TD-125 is a belt drive turntable. The Koss Pro 4aa are a classic pair of full-size, over-ear headphones introduced in 1970. They were designed for professional use and are known for their high-fidelity sound and impressive noise isolation.
In the fourth photo, we see John and Yoko collaborating on the coffee table. Behind them sits a large floorstanding speaker, which we believe to be a Janszen Z900.
The Janszen Z900 is a two way speaker equipped with a pair of large woofers and four electrostatic panels for the midrange and high frequencies.
